To overcome this sin, Lord Murugan is said to have installed a Linga in this temple region, dug a spring with his Divine Spear, the Vel, and is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva. It is said that the famous Saivite saint and Nayanar of the 8th century CE, Sundarar, while arriving in the temple region, rested in a Vinayaka temple, and forgot to get thoughts of Lord Shiva. To test Sundarar, Lord Shiva is said to have sent his Bhutaganas to steal all of Sundarar’s possessions. Sundarar is said to have sang angrily about Lord Shiva, blaming him for his losses. Lord Shiva was pleased with this and is then said to have appeared before Sundarar, blessed him, and restored all of his possessions. The temple is believed to have been built by the Kongu Cholas, with several stone inscriptions by King Vikrama Chola I on the walls of the temple. SIGNIFICANCE OF THIRUMURUGANPOONDI - THIRUMURUGANATHA SWAMY TEMPLE : Devotees visit this temple to overcome Brahmahathi Dosha to bring relief to poor mental development or other similar serious health and life issues. They also visit the temple to rid themselves of Ketu Dosha. It is also believed that devotees can recover their lost items by reciting Saint Sundarar’s Pathigam of this temple. The idol of Lord Thirumuruganatha Swamy is seen facing the south, without his Divine Spear, the Vel, and without his Divine Vehicle, the Peacock. Lord Shiva in the form of Lord Thirumuruganatheeswarar is seen facing the west. Goddess Avudainayagi is seen facing the west. There is no Rajagopuram. The temple was originally surrounded by a flower garden. There are three temple tanks. There are sculptures of Saint Sundarar in front of the temple depicting his condition of sadness when he lost his possessions, and the happiness he experienced when he got them back.

Thirumuruganatheeswarar temple in Thirumuruganpoondy, Avinashi Thirumuruganpoondi, a town panchayat in Tirupur district, is about five km from Avinashi, that lies at a distance of five km from it and about eight km from Tirupur. He was directed to go to Kandamapuri in Kongu Nadu, make a lingam out of sand and offer worship. Subramanya obeyed and the presiding deity of the temple came to be known as Muruganatheeswarar and the place Thirumuruganpoondi (earlier Kandamapuri). Due to this fact the shrine has become famous for curing autism and mental problems. On entering the temple, after worshipping Raja Ganapathy, one will witness a vast courtyard with a dwjasthambam and a 16-pillared nritya mantapam, on the northern side of the entrance. Then there is a rectangular mantapam, also a part of the maha mantapam, which has a separate shrine for Muruga facing south. He goes by the appellation, Shanmukam, a five-ft icon, with five of his faces looking towards south and the sixth one facing north. Seated on abeautifully sculpted peacock, he is flanked by His consorts, Valli and Devasena. At the entrance of the maha mantapam are the exquisite statues of dwarapalakas, Dandi and Mundi. The presiding deity Muruganatheeswarar is a small lingam with a five-headed snake spreading its hood over it. There is no enclosure around the garbha griha for circumambulation. To the left of the presiding deity is the shrine for goddess Muyangupoon Mulai Valli or Alingabushana Sthanambigai.

Autism is not a disease

AHMEDABAD: When Sapna was two-and-a-half-year old, she used to laugh without reason, flap her hands and was unable to speak. It was only then Shalini realized that there was something wrong with her daughter. After consultations with doctors in Ahmedabad and Lucknow, she came to know that Sapna (name changed) is an autistic child.

Experts believe that autism presents itself in the first 3 years. The condition is the result of a neurological disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, affecting communication and social interaction skills. The exact cause of autism is not known though recent research indicates that it could be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Dr Kunjal Upadhyay, who is working on autism said, "There are no medical tests for its diagnosis and it gets more difficult in India to get one." 

When Shalini took her daughter to paediatricians for regular check ups, she was assured that Sapna is just 'slow'. Dissatisfied, she went to a psychologist who said that her child is "mentally subnormal". It was only after she visited King George Medical College in Lucknow that she got to know that Sapna is autistic. Dr Vinod Kumar Goyal, head of Autism Society of India, stresses on the need of doctors to be more sensitive while dealing with autism. Usually doctors certify the affected child as mentally retarded or schizophrenic which is not the case with autistic persons. There is a different set of symptoms for autism and they should be treated accordingly, said Dr Goyal who deals with at least 15 cases of Autism every month.

Experts estimate that every 2-6 children out of every 1000 have Autism. The prevalence rate of autism in India is 1 in 250 (figure may vary as many cases are not diagnosed) and currently 10 million people are suffering in India. The government only recognized the disorder in 2001, till 1980s, there were reports that Autism didn't exist in India.

Persons with autism were until recently treated as mentally retarded by government in case of grant of concessions and benefits but not all the persons with autism are mentally retarded.

Manju Singh, soft skills trainer who has been working in this field for many years said, "Till recently Autism was incurable, though there were some improvements in affected people through various therapies like art therapy." Dr Goyal says that Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Dietary therapy help autistic kids.TMS involves giving mild electric currents to autistic person to increase their blood flow whereas dietary therapy is used to provide special supplements to autistic people as they are averse to eating in general.Free diagnosis camp

On the occasion of sixth world autism day, Autism Society of India has organized free consultation camp in Vastrapur at Parth Hospital. There will also be free psychological tests for those affected. Every Sunday this month, Autism Society of India will hold free consultations.

Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that manifests in children by the age of three. The degree may vary from mild to very severe and is hence it is known as Autism Spectrum Disorder. Government of India now recognizes autism as a disability.

Symptoms of Autism: Autistic children can hear, see and feel yet have difficulty in understanding and expressing what their senses tell them. Skills that a normal child picks up naturally have to be taught to children with autism.

Myth: Autistic people are low on emotional quotient. But that is incorrect.

This laboratory school, started in March 1994 has gained recognition as a model school for children with autism in India, as well as South East Asia. As with any quality institution, the students and their families receive direct benefit and an improved quality of life.  The school applies, modifies, and adapts training techniques gathered from around the world to the Indian context. The approach is eclectic, highly individualized, with an intelligent amalgamation of various internationally recognised ‘best teaching’ methodologies like Structured Teaching, ABA, VBA, to name some. In addition, new techniques are continually tested and evaluated in a controlled setting, before being referred to parents and professionals in other parts of India

Currently, the Open Door Day School has six sections in which children aged 3 – 18 are placed depending on their skills, needs and chronological age. In the early years the emphasis is on developing communication, building basic interaction skills, pre-reading and writing skills and concept building. The skills are taught both in one-on-one sessions, as well as group activities. The group activities also serve as a platform to develop important social skills and to generalize learnt skills. Alongside, the child’s abilities to work independently and interpret instructions in the general environment are developed and strengthened. Gradually, the children learn independent work behaviours that enable them to learn vocational skills. Children, who are ready, move onto mainstream classrooms. For the others, we target prevocational skills, work behaviors and functional academics. In addition to the group activities and one-on-one teaching, music therapy, computer training and sensory integration are also provided to the students.

In some of our sections, in addition to prevocational learning, we have also focused on academics. These classes follow the general school curriculum, which is modified and adapted to make academic learning fun, interesting and meaningful. Learning in these classes is made experiential by using concrete materials, models and a ‘touch and feel’ aspect to the lessons. Demonstrations, project work, presentations and educational visits are coupled with lessons. The CCE ASSESSMENT (comprehensive and cumulative evaluation) format is followed for gauging the progress.

Each of the classrooms is led by a special educator with a formal training in autism. In addition, trainees participating in the (D Ed Spl Ed- ASD), teacher aides and support staff are also part of the classrooms, making the adult student ratio in the classrooms from between 1:2 to 1:3. The ratio helps sustain quality of services offered, as well as provision of individualized attention wherever required. Interns and volunteers are also placed in classrooms depending on the requirement in specific classrooms.

At OPEN DOOR, we, at all times, strive to act as a catalyst for change that will enable the children with autism be integrated in and live as fully participating members of the community.

TIPS for Vocabulary for Autistic Kids

Most of the autistic children struggle with language. These children dont know many words which creates lot of hinderance in their communication. The best help parents and care givers can provide is to enrich their vocabulary so that they can comprehend whatever they hear or read.

It was observed that Most of the autistic children lack in very basic vocabulary. so it is advised to teach them practically either by actions or through Pictures.

The Three Vocabulary Tiers
Tier 1 - These basic common words usually have a physical concrete referent and are the easiest to teach with regard to meaning. These are often the words teachers assume that children already know. Educators, however, may teach examples of multiple meaning for these words, idioms, and high frequency everyday expressions. Examples of Tier 1 words include “school,” “block,” “boy,” “walk” or common expressions such as “make up your mind.”
Tier 2 - These high frequency words contribute to the richness of books and conversation and are sometimes described as utility words. There is usually a lack of explicit instruction for many of these words, unless there is a demonstrated need for such. These words are less concrete but students have often acquired the meaning of many through exposure during daily living activities. Examples of Tier 2 words include “simple,” “because,” “for instance,” “estimate,” “plot” and “country.” Mastery of Tier 2 words is important for the comprehension of text books and daily reading material. There are too many words in this class for teachers to teach all the vocabulary words that might constitute Tier 2, so they must be selective. Tier 2 is sometimes called the level of the mature language user; this does not mean only adults users but individuals who have moved beyond basic simple sentences and basic concrete vocabulary.
Tier 3 - These are low frequency words that are found in content books about specific subjects. These are words that children may not encounter until the upper grades. These words need to be consciously learned and/or taught directly since they are not common in ordinary communication or media exchanges. Examples of Tier 3 words include: “isotope,” “phylum,” “Impressionism,” and “Renaissance Period.”

Delayed Developmental Milestone describes the omission or arrest of a stage of early development. Every normal, full-term baby is born with aset of primitive or survival reflexes that are inhibited or controlled by higher centres in the brain during the first year of life, In normal condition the primitive reflexes themselves are inhibited by normal body movement development. If these are not inhibited at the correct time, they remain active in the body then they affect the Child Development in three unique way: a) If interfering with child physical development in case of Cerebral Palsy or Delayed Milestones then will result in absence of Neck Control, Sitting, Standing and Walking Development. b) If interfering in Normal Child Development than can result inbalance, motor control, eye functioning, eye-hand coordination, perceptual skills and result in behavioral symptoms (Neuropsychiatric Conditions) of Autism, ASD, ADHD, etc. c) If the primitive reflexes are not fully integrated and do not have interference in child development than they can result in Learning Disability like Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, Auditory Sensory Perceptual Disorder, etc. At CCPALD Center, we integrate the Retained Primitive Reflexes with Bio - mechanically designed exercises and initiate the Normal physical & Neurological development of a Child retaining the primitive reflexes and physical disorders.
