Samashrayanam is the process by which one performs 'saranagati' (taking refuge of the Lord).
The 5 sacraments (pancha samkara) administered are :
a) tapanam - the emblems of Lord Vishnu (counch and disc) are branded on the left and right shoulders. The intend is to purify one of sins and render the body fit for devotional service. It marks one for life as a servant and property of the Lord
b) pundram - sectarian mark which represents the feet of the Lord is marked on the forehead with white clay. The red line in in the centre symbolises Laksmi
c) dasya nama - giving a new name which indicates ones eternal status as a servant of God
d) mantra upadesa - disciple taught the 3 sacred mantras
e) yaga - disciple given Icons of the Lord and instructed in the method of deity worship
